Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

A safe, simple treatment, microneedling involves rolling a device studded with sharp, sterile needles over the surface of your skin. The needles puncture your skin to form tiny microconduits, which are wounds that activate the skin’s healing process.

These tiny holes stimulate your skin, triggering the production of collagen and elastin that are essential to youthful skin. Microneedling has the added benefit of boosting the creation of new capillaries below the surface of your skin to promote the healing of scar tissue.

Because microneedling involves creating tiny punctures, you won’t be a good candidate for the treatment if you have active acne, a skin infection, or cold sores. However, microneedling works on a range of skin tones, without the typical risk of skin discoloration common with some aesthetic skin therapies.

What can microneedling treat?

Microneedling can treat a variety of skin conditions, providing significant, long-lasting results. The treatment can improve the appearance of such skin conditions as:

  • Acne
  • Large pores
  • Stretch marks
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

What should I expect during microneedling?

Microneedling is a simple office procedure. First, Dr. McLeod applies a topical anesthetic to your skin to numb the treatment area. Then, he rolls the microneedling device about 15-20 times, shifting the direction of the roller so it travels horizontally, vertically, and obliquely over your skin.

The length of time varies, but a typical procedure takes 20 minutes or less. Afterward, Dr. McLeod moisturizes your skin with saline pads.

Your treatments will be spaced out around every six weeks to allow time for new collagen to form. The total number of treatments you’ll need will vary, depending on the condition of your skin. For example, you may need 3-4 treatments for moderate acne scars.

What should I expect after microneedling?

Your skin will likely be a little red for a few days, and you’ll want to protect it from the sun and wear sunscreen. You’ll be able to return to work the day after your treatment.
