Anti-Aging Q & A

How does aging affect my skin?

Aging skin is caused by a variety of factors, including family history, the environment, and lifestyle. Some of the causes of aging skin, such as sun damage, smoking, and alcohol use, are under your control while others are not.

Aging is a gradual process. Over time, your face loses some of its natural fullness — what you probably called baby fat when you were younger. Lines appear around your eyes, mouth, and on your forehead. You may discover your skin texture and tone is thin and drier than it once was.

A healthy diet and exercise can improve your overall wellness and circulation, potentially giving you a more youthful look. Skin treatments and noninvasive procedures are commonly used to restore a more youthful appearance by tightening loose skin, smoothing wrinkles, improving your skin tone and complexion.

What are anti-aging treatments?

Noninvasive or minimally invasive therapies can improve the signs of aging on your face and neck, and along your jawline — giving you a more youthful, well-rested appearance.

Some of the more popular treatments require little or no downtime and include lasers fillers (hich are also called injectables, like Botox®), microneedling and platelet-rich plasma facials.

What are fillers?

At Open Canvas Laser, frequent fillers that are used are Sclupltra, Restalin, and Juvederm. Fillers can be made of naturally occurring substances like hyaluronic acid. When injected with precision, fillers restore the “baby fat” and volume you lost as you aged and improve the appearance of your face, cheeks, lips and other areas.

What is Botox?

Botox is a form of a neuromodulator that’s injected to relax the muscles causing your wrinkles. Botox can treat and prevent wrinkles around your eyes, eyebrows, forehead, lips, chin, and neck.

What is a platelet-rich plasma facial?

Sometimes called a “vampire facial,” a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) facial uses your natural platelets, or blood cells, to improve your skin’s appearance. Commonly used to help athletes recover from injuries, platelet-rich plasma is now helping to counteract the signs of aging by promoting wound healing in age-damaged skin.*

How do platelet-rich plasma facials work?

A PRP facial is a three-step treatment to diminish wrinkles, plump up sagging skin, minimize acne scars, and rejuvenate your complexion. It takes less than an hour. Here’s what to expect:

  • Dr. McLeod draws blood about 2-4 tablespoons of blood from your arm
  • A machine spins the blood to separate the platelets
  • Dr. McLeod injects your face or scalp with the high concentration of platelets

Afterward, you may have some mild pain, bruising, and swelling, but that should go away in a few days. You can return to your daily routine immediately.

Dr. McLeod typically combines PRP facials with microneedling to stimulate collagen and keep your skin looking fresh.
